The most frequently asked MOT questions

The three most frequently asked MOT questions

Over the many years and various experiences with customers, we assure every driver of all the necessary information relating to your MOT. Hands down, the three most frequently asked MOT questions are:

What is an MOT test?

Also known as a Ministry of Transport test , a valid MOT is an annual legal requirement for every vehicle older than three years. Providing your vehicle passes its MOT, you will be given proof via a certificate.

What is the difference between an MOT and a service?

We are asked this so often that we designated a whole MOT and Service article to it!

What different types of MOTs are there? (Also known as ‘classes’)

Check out our previously published article, written solely around this topic, which explains the different MOT classes and which type of vehicle belongs to which class.

We appreciate that for vehicle owners, MOTs really can prove to be a minefield! Our aim is to break it all down as simply as possible for you to really understand when your MOT is due, how often and what to expect in the whole process, step by step.

To make all of our MOT information readily available to you, you can read our MOT FAQs or browse the rest of this article to quickly obtain the main areas of information.

How to prepare for my vehicle’s MOT

As well as knowing when your MOT is due, the UK government has compiled a useful MOT inspection checklist for you to consult prior to your MOT test. The more you prepare your vehicle, the better the chance of it successfully passing.

What are the most common reasons for failure?

Surprisingly for most vehicle owners, the most common failure points occur in the vehicle’s lamps and electrical equipment (27% of all defects), suspension (accounts for nearly 19% of all MOT failures) and brakes that makeup 17% of MOT detected defects.

How long does an MOT test take?

At Delany’s, your vehicle’s MOT takes approximately 50 minutes. In that time, you’re more than welcome to wait with your vehicle, where you will be offered complimentary coffee, biscuits, magazines and Wi-Fi.

How much will my MOT cost?

At Delany’s, the cost of an MOT is £40 (for a Class 4 MOT), and £58.60 (for a Class 7 MOT). This also includes a free re-test within 10 working days of your original test, should your vehicle require it. This means that if your vehicle fails, you have 10 working days to get any repair work done. If you have the vehicle repaired, you can get it re-tested and passed with us for free.
